Syrian Center of the Cyclone: Keeping Events and Forces Comprehensible

The situation in Syria is complex enough to sort out for experts in the field, let alone the lay public. This article gives the 7-year history of the conflict as well as who are the opposing political actors. They include a terrific map which shows various oppositional strongholds. There are no solutions here but it is important to understand what is going on. What the article does not cover is why Assad needs to accept any “transition” government at all.
