European Poverty Won’t Be Solved By Universal Basic Income Handouts

As of 2017 about one fourth of the European population was at risk of falling into poverty. To address the problem, some workers have turned to fascism, thinking that immigrants and refugees are the problem. Meanwhile, centrists and the Five Star movement in Italy have proposed a Universal Basic Income as a solution. This article points out the shortcomings of that proposal. The real solution is for the socialist left in Europe to provide a concrete transition program which resolves this problem structurally.
