Disaster Socialism From Central America to Far Rockaway

Capitalist propaganda presents a picture of human social life that is straight out of Thomas Hobbes: isolated atoms crashing into each other randomly. This same propaganda says that without the “free” market and the state, people’s behavior becomes even more selfish than usual. But there is a mountain of evidence from mass psychologists which concludes that most of the time people are at their best during natural disasters. In fact, what happens is that people behave as socialists. The author of this article describes her experience organizing cooperatives in Far Rockaway.
