On average, how much of the city budget goes to policing? According to this article it’s between 25% to 40%. That doesn’t even include the cost of the aftermath of police violence which is paid for in taxes. In the light of the coronavirus, funding for hospitals, schools and buses is far more important. What was missing from the article was a structured replacement for the police. A way for citizens to get involved in the process of planning city budgets is through community participation budgeting.
