Perils of Debt Collection by Capitalists: Lessons from the Ancient World

According to Michael Hudson no society in the ancient world survived that insisted debtors must repay their debts as Yankee capitalists insist on today. Instead, during a “Jubilee year”, debts were forgiven which allowed workers to continue to live productive lives.  Hudson argues that “forgive us our trespasses” in The Lord’s Prayer originally meant “forgive us our debts”. This was the real reason Jesus was put to death.
